Buying Eggs in Abuja: Prices, Quantities and How to Store Them
Food Tips
Eggs are the one thing almost every Nigerian kitchen runs out of at the worst possible moment. They are also the easiest thing to overbuy and then waste, because most people buy a full crate whether they need one or not.
Here is what eggs cost in Abuja right now, how to buy the right quantity, and how to store them so they last.

Egg prices in Abuja
We sell fresh eggs at N300 per egg. Pricing per egg rather than per crate means you buy what you actually need:
- 6 eggs — N1,800
- 12 eggs — N3,600
- 15 eggs (half crate) — N4,500
- 30 eggs (full crate) — N9,000

How many eggs does a household actually need?
A family of four eating eggs three mornings a week uses about 12 to 15 eggs weekly. A full crate covers roughly a fortnight. If you are buying a crate every week and throwing some away, you are buying for the packaging rather than for your kitchen.
Households that bake, or that use eggs in fried rice and moi moi as well as breakfast, comfortably go through a crate a week.
How to tell if an egg is still good
The float test is the reliable one. Put the egg in a bowl of water. A fresh egg sinks and lies flat. An older but usable egg stands upright on the bottom. An egg that floats should be thrown away, because the air pocket inside has grown large enough to lift it.
Cracked shells are a separate issue. Bacteria get in through cracks, so use those immediately or discard them.
Storing eggs properly
Store eggs pointed end down. The air pocket sits at the round end, and keeping it uppermost helps the yolk stay centred and the egg stay fresh longer.
Keep them in the carton rather than loose in a fridge door tray. The carton protects against odours, and the door is the warmest, most temperature-unstable part of the fridge. If you are not refrigerating, a cool spot away from sunlight is fine for a week or two.
Do not wash eggs before storing. The shell has a natural coating that blocks bacteria, and washing removes it.
