Frozen Fish Prices in Abuja: Kote, Panla, Titus & Croaker Compared
Product Guides
Fish is the cheapest reliable protein in most Abuja kitchens, but only if you know which one you are buying. Kote, panla, titus, shawa, tilapia and croaker all behave differently in the pot, and the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive is nearly threefold.
This is a plain guide to what each fish is good for and what it currently costs in Abuja.

Which fish for which dish
Titus — the one worth paying for
Titus mackerel has firm flesh and a rich, slightly oily flavour that survives heavy seasoning. It grills exceptionally well and holds together in stew rather than collapsing. At N13,000/kg it is the most expensive here, and for special meals it earns it.
Kote — the everyday workhorse
Kote is firm enough to grill, cheap enough to cook twice a week, and forgiving if you overcook it slightly. If you want one fish to default to, this is it.

Panla — mild and flaky
Panla has a milder taste and softer, flakier flesh. It suits pepper soup and light stews. It does not grill as well as kote because it breaks apart more easily.

Tilapia — sweet, best whole
Tilapia is sweeter and more tender. Best grilled or fried whole rather than cut into a stew, where the delicate flesh disappears.

Shawa — strong flavoured and cheap
Shawa is oily and full flavoured. At N4,000/kg it is the cheapest option, and it gives real depth to stews. If you dislike strong fish flavour, skip it.

Croaker — the pepper soup fish
Croaker is sold per whole fish rather than by weight. Firm white flesh, excellent in pepper soup and superb grilled whole. Per-fish pricing makes it easy to plan for guests.

Buying and storing frozen fish well
Buy fish that is solidly frozen, with clear eyes if whole. Avoid packs with heavy internal ice, which suggests thawing and refreezing. Get it into the freezer quickly rather than leaving it in a hot car.
Portion before freezing so you thaw only what you will cook. Thaw in the fridge overnight, never on the counter, and never refreeze raw fish once thawed.
What a week of fish costs
Cooking fish four times a week for a family of four uses roughly 4 kg. On kote and tilapia that is about N19,000 weekly. On titus it is closer to N52,000. Most households mix: cheaper fish midweek, titus or croaker at the weekend.
